Chapter Fourteen

Russ kept his hand on Alexandria’s back as they neared the table full of his friends. He’d known that Cal and Teresa were going to be here tonight. And of course, Clay and Marianne. But he hadn’t realized that what seemed like every one of their whole group of friends would all be out together.

He wasn’t worried for himself. Sure, the guys would no doubt raise an eyebrow here and there, and he’d probably have to face some questions next time he saw them. But that didn’t bother him; he’d be happy to tell them whatever they wanted to know. What he wasn’t sure about was how Alexandria, he smiled to himself – Ria, would feel faced with such a big group.

He decided one thing as they approached the group; he wouldn’t land her in it like with Tino and announce her full name. Some of his friends were real wine connoisseurs and he didn’t want her to have to face that again.

Of course, when they reached the table, Teresa was the first to greet them. She jumped to her feet and came to them with a big smile on her face. “There you are. I was getting ready to call you if you didn’t show.”

He rolled his eyes at her as he bent to kiss her cheek. “Terry.”

She laughed. “Russ.”

Alexandria had stepped back a little way while Teresa greeted him. He slipped his arm around her waist and drew her forward. “Ria, I’d like you to meet Teresa – Terry. She’s one of my oldest friends. We went to kindergarten together. She’s also Terry, Cal’s fiancée.” He winked at her as he added that last part, remembering how she’d thought that Terry was Cal’s male fiancé. “Terry, this is Ria.”

Teresa’s eyebrows shot up, but whatever caused her surprise, she recovered quickly. “It’s very nice to meet you.”

“You, too.” Ria held her hand out to shake, but Teresa laughed and pulled her into a hug.

“We may as well start as we mean to go on, and I have a feeling that you and I are going to be friends. You must be special to have this guy …” Russ was glad that she stopped before she blurted out whatever it was she’d been about to say, and even more glad when Nina came to join them with a big smile on her face.

“It’s good to see you out, Russ.” Nina smiled at him expectantly, and he had to laugh as he turned back to Ria.

“Ria, this is Nina. Another one of my oldest friends and one of the kindergarten gang. Nina, meet Ria.”

Just like Teresa had, Nina leaned in for a hug. “It’s lovely to meet you.” She shot a quick glance at Russ. “I believe you met Manny at the gym.”

Russ pursed his lips as Manny came to join them and slid his arm around Nina’s waist. At least he had the good grace to give Ria an apologetic smile as he shook hands with her. “It’s good to see you again.
